DO YOU KNOW ?

How much America paid to Russia for Alaska?
America bought it from Russia for $ 7,200,000.
This worked out somewhere about 2 cents per acre.
The deal was negotiated by the American Secratary
of State, Seward. Despite the deal costing less
than 2 cents per acre, it was reffered to as;
"Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Ice-box"!!!

SOME THOUGHTS

A few thoughts for today...

  • Happiness is like a butterfly:More you chase it, more it runs away from you. But if you concentrate on other matters, then it comes slowly towards you and sits on your shoulder.
  • Two most pitiful situations of life are :
    A motherless home
    and A homeless mother.
  • Love can face anything :its faith, its hope, and its tolerance bear no limits.
  • You cannot enjoy the beauty of a rainbow unless you are ready to face clouds and storms.

DIVORCE & SUICIDE

Is there anything common to divorce and suicide or are they different ? A.ALVAREZ in 'Life After Marriage' has described it in a few sentences.

Divorce and suicide have many characteristics in common and one crucial difference : although both are devastatingly public admissions of failure, divorce, unlike suicide, has to be lived through.

A Mathematical Puzzle

Let's have one more mathematical puzzle today. Solve it and if you find answer place a comment here.

A man has 9 children, all born at regular intervals. The sum of the squares of their ages is equal to the square of his own age. If ages are in exact number of years, find the age of every one.

ARE WE REALLY SOCIAL ?

Man(human being) is a social animal. This sentence is taught in schools to describe the nature of man.In what sense are we social ? Is it because we live in family, interact with one another, rear and educate our children, make friends, etc.,etc.? To some extent we are social on personal level but as a species we have never shown SOCIALITY...we kill other animals...we destroy environment...we do great harm to mother nature for short-term gains...we fight among ourselves...in family...in streets...on borders...and then we call ourselves SOCIAL ANIMAL !!!!!!!

SCIENCE

What is science ? Much of our understanding of science as a branch of knowledge is that 'Science is a collection of information which previous generations did not have idea of and that it presents facts in their real form. A few words by Henri Poincare are enough to correlate science with facts.

Science is facts; just as houses are made of stones, so is science made of facts; but a pile of stones is not a house and a collection of facts is not necessarily science.

BEING RICH...

When a person becomes rich his life style changes and lustre of money is reflected clearly in his behaviour. At times such people become centre of criticism by those who feel that he has lost his earlier simplicity and respect for others, particularly less wealthy than he. Is it unfair to exhibit the power of money ? Logan Pearsall Smith describes his view in following words :

To suppose, as we all suppose,
that we could be rich
and not behave as the rich behave,
is like supposing that
we could drink all day
and keep absolutely sober.

MARKETING CONCEPTS !!!

This is the age of Marketing. Everything sells but one needs to campaign with all possible tools in operation to succeed. Here is some fuuny way to describe marketing concepts.

You see a gorgeous girl at a party and you say to her, "Hi, I'm very rich. Marry me!" That's Direct Marketing.

LEAP YEAR

Which year is a 'Leap Year' ? Is every fourth year a Leap Year ? The answer is 'NO'. It is true that leap year comes every four year in general or to be more precise each year that is divisible by four is Leap Year but there is some exception. Out of those years ending in '00 only the years divisible by 400 are leap years. Thus 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 were Leap Years but 1900 was not a leap year and 2100 will not be a leap year.

The need for leap year arises due to occasional change (generally slowing down) in the rotational speed of the earth. Addition of one day to the leap year does not settle the calendar exactly so we sometimes add leap seconds to a year to synchronise the calendar with the atomic clock. The year 1972 was not only a leap year but two leap seconds were also added to it.

A BIG BITE TODAY !!!

Yes, I have referred to this as a big bite because today I am posting a few good thoughts in place of only one. There is nothing common in these thoughts. Just because they are among my favourites...

  • The only time a woman really succeeds in changing a man is when he's a baby.
    ______________________Natalie Wood

  • If homosexuality were normal, God would have created Adam and Bruce.
    ______________________Anita Bryant

  • Every morning I get up and look through the Forbes list of the richest people in America. If I am not there, I go to work.
    ______________________Robert Orben

  • It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.
    ______________________Abraham Lincoln

  • Television enables you to be entertained in your home by people you wouldn't have in your home.
    ______________________David Frost

  • There are only two ways of telling the complete truth-anonymously and posthumously.
    ______________________Thomas Sowell

  • The essence of success is that it is never necessary to think of a new idea oneself. It is far better to wait until somebody else does it, and then to copy him in every detail except his mistakes.

GENERATIONS

We are talking a lot about generations and the generation gap when we compare, consciously or subconsciously, historical times with the present situation. Each generation believes that what they did was and are doing is the best thing anyone could do. George Orwell has said this nicely in a few words :

Each generation imagines itself
to be more intelligent
than the one that went before it,
and wiser
than the one that comes after it.

A LAWYER'S JOKE

To have some humourous moments here is a joke on lawyers.

The priest settled into a chair in the lawyer's office.
"Is it true," said the priest, "that your firm does not charge members of the clergy ?"
"I'm afraid you're misinformed," said the attorney. "People in your profession can look forward to a reward in the next world, but we lawyers have to take our reward in this one."

EDUCATION

In this age of explosion of knowledge everybody is aware of the significance of 'Education'. For most people 'education' is what they or their children get in schools or colleges but one should not forget that their is an open university (world, of course !) where every one gets knowledge absolutely free of charge and that knowledge is sometimes far more important in shaping the course of our life. Let us read the thought by Montesquieu :

We receive three educations,
one from our parents,
one from our schoolmasters,
and one from the world.
The third contradicts all
that the first two teach us.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY (SELF-ESTEEM)

Self-esteem, the sense of realising the importance of one's ownself is a highly significant aspect of life. Those who do injustice to their ownself in the process of making others better placed must remember the following words by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

It is easy to live for others;
everybody does.
I call on you
to live for yourselves.

A PROVERB

A proverb is a short sentence (statement) or phrase carrying some big truth or message. These few words have the power of changing the world, a power sometimes not manifested by hundred-page books. Read the following one.

even when he holds his tongue,
says more than the fool
when he speaks

LOVE ME NOT...

Today I have brought a poem from my collection; the author (poet) is unknown. I like this poem very much because it has a strong message for the young generation.

Love me not for comely grace,
For my pleasing eye or face,
Not for any outward part,
No, nor for my constant heart;
For those may fail or turn to ill,
so thou and I shall sever.
Keep therefore a true woman's eye,
And love me still, but know not why,
So hast thou the same reason still
To dote upon me ever.

COMPUTER LAUGHTER

To avoid human error in calculations and prediction, a famous Astrological institution installed a super computer. They invited a popular politician to inaugurate it. The politician had doubts about computer predicting correctly. So at the inauguration he asked the computer : "Where is my father nowadays ?"

Computer : "In your native place doing farming."

Politician : "No, he died some five years back."

Computer : "The one who died five years ago was your mother's husband. Your father is still alive in your native place doing farming !"

WHO LIVES IN '9 - DOWNING STREET' ?

We hear '10 - Downing Street' mentioned
time and again in media
because it is the official residence
of the British Prime Minister.
Do you know who lives in '9 - Downing Street' ?
If I say 'Nobody'
one may assume that
it being in the neighbourhood of
Prime Minister's residence
nobody is allowed to
stay there for security reasons.
But it is not the case.
Surprisingly there are only three numbered houses
in the Downing Street and they are 10, 11 and 12.
The Chancellor lives in and works from No.11
and No.12 accommodates offices
besides being the Government's Chief Whip's house.
There is nothing like houses
numbered from 1 to 9 !!!

DEFINING A "TRUE FRIEND"

We get and lose a number of friends through our life but everybody knows that it is very difficult to have even a few 'TRUE FRIENDS'. Perhaps, we remain confused for most of the time in deciding who our True Friend is. Here is a proverb which gives us the right definition of a True Friend.

The proper office of a friend is
to side with you when you are in the wrong.
Nearly anybody will side with you
when you are in the right.

ONE MORE BITE ON 'MAN'...

Man is considered to be the most selfish animal because though the man is called 'the image of god', for most part of his life he is planning to survive at the cost of others in a way that conceals his 'killer' intentions !!! A few words by ANTIMEDON written in 'The Greek Anthology' give us perfect idea of what a man is :

Drinking together in the evening we are human.
When dawn comes, animals
We rise up against each other.

Now Solution to puzzle of March, 30

30 * 20 = (30 + 20) (30 - 20) = 500

25 * 15 = (25 + 15) (25 - 15) = 400

33 * 22 = (33 + 22) (33 - 22) = 605

24 * 18 = (24 + 18) (24 - 18) = 252

THEN

27 * 22 = (27 + 22) (27 - 22) = 245

ANSWER : 245

VEGETARIANISM

Are you a non-vegetarian ? Its not entirely your fault, it may have cultural or familial influence or partly the so called natural compulsion. For some non-vegetarianism is 'fashion'- a way of life. The following words by K. D. Lang are dedicated to the victims of such brutal non-vegetarians.

If you knew how meat was made,
you'd probably lose your lunch.
I know-I'm from cattle country.
That's why I became a vegetarian.

PLANET EARTH

We live on Planet Earth and get, from her, whatever is necessary to sustain life. Yet the selfish beast within us does not understand that the way we are exploiting Mother Earth will one day result in irreversible harm to mankind and the life in general.

LET US NOT FORGET

...that we have not inherited this earth
from our forefathers but we have borrowed
it from our children.
-----------------------------

Unless we keep this in our mind
the earth cannot become HEAVEN !

A BITE ON "POSITIVE THINKING"

We talk a lot about one's attitude being 'negative' or' positive'. We find very few people with 'positive attitude' surprising everybody by their progress. One major contributor to the success of some persons is their 'positive way of thinking'. Here is a short story told by a friend during a discussion regarding "Positive Thinking".

A footwear company sent two of its salesmen
for a survey to an island where people were
living comparatively backward life. The
salesmen on their tour found that nobody was
wearing anything as footwear. After a week's
journey they returned to the company and
submitted reports prepared individually.

The first person reported

Since these people are habituated
to walk bare-footed, there is no use
trying to sell footwear here.

The second person reported

Surprisingly, nobody here is found to
have a habit of footwear. If somehow we
persuade a few persons to wear our chappals
and shoes then I am sure we will have a
big demand created within a short time and
our company will make huge gains !!!

I don't think I have to say anything
further to describe what the difference
between 'Positive' and 'Negative' thinking is.

A BITE ON 'NATURE'...

It is difficult for us to understand nature and, more we try to disclose its secrets more we find ourselves trapped in a mess which ends nowhere. Perhaps those who accept the superiority of nature are happier than those who, driven by their intelligence, try to reveal the so called 'Truths about Nature'. D.H. Lawrence has described the superiority of nature beautifully in "The Third Thing" :

Water is H2O, hydrogen two parts, oxygen one,
but there is also a third thing, that makes it water
and nobody knows what it is.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY

We have hundreds of 'faiths' (religions) all over the world and each has its own philosophy regarding life and god. Let us see what Beatrix Potter has said about Faith.

All outward forms of religion are almost useless,
and are the causes of endless strife...
Believe there is a great power
silently working all things for good,
behave yourself and never mind the rest.
